JAMIE SPINELLO
Austin, Tx born: Lafayette, Louisiana grew up in Jackson, Mississippi BFA 2005: University of Southern Mississippi MFA 2007: San Francisco Art Institute Austin, Tx: 2010 - present I am a full-time artist creating sculpture, ceramics and jewelry inspired by plants and insects. My current sculptural works and wearable art are influenced by research of the flora and fauna of central Texas and the plants and insects in my garden. My education was in painting and 2D design. The sculpture dept was something I was always envious of and curious about in school, but I kept my distance. Since graduation, sculpture ironically has been the focus of my creative exploration. Most of the sculptural techniques beyond fundamentals, I have taught myself. I cast all of my sterling silver and bronze metal work in my own studio using the lost wax casting method with a centrifugal casting machine. I started small by sand casting in delft clay over a decade ago. Over the years I began exploring my ideas in larger formats by learning riveting techniques for cold connections, laser cutting and welding. I spent most of my time growing up in Mississippi and Louisiana surrounded by an abundance of biodiversity. Always curious about organisms in the undergrowth and learning about plants, I found solace in the tiny creatures under leaves and the life cycle of plants and insects. I attribute my lasting fascination with learning about and incorporating plants and insects into my art to my early exposure to learning about them as a child, wanting to protect them and being hyper aware that many of my peers around me did not feel the same way and wanting that to change. |
