Last month I installed my sculpture, "Allochory" at its permanent home in Las Cruces, New Mexico at the City Hall. I was able to borrow Kristen's dad's trailer, and we had to disassemble the sculpture to transport it. It was just a hair too large to fit within the confines of the 7ft x 14 ft walls. Kristen Van Patten and I drove my sculpture out to Las Cruces from Austin, TX, pulling a 14ft trailer, which took just around 14 hrs to get there. It took us around 3 days to get it installed. Moving the scupture after we reassembled it, to the install site. Reassembly of the sculpture took an entire day by itself. So many pieces of numbered hardware specific to each piece and component. I initially created this sculpture in 2019 as part of the City of Austin Art in Public Places Tempo program, where the city of Austin funded the construction of sculptures for temporary installation at library and park sites throughout Austin. After completion of that exhibition, which lasted a little under a year, I was then able to use it to apply to other public art opportunities around Texas and regionally. I saw a regional call for a purchase award with the state of New Mexico in 2020, and I applied with this sculpture and three others. In 2021 a few of my sculptures were selected to be included in a State of New Mexico public art catalog that was then sent around to all New Mexico government buildings that were being funded to make site upgrades. Each building picked art from the catalog for their building, and in 2024, Las Cruces picked my sculpture, "Allochory", for their city hall! When New Mexico selected it, no one knew it would be installed in a garden in Las Cruces now full of red yucca plants, an unplanned but meaningful coincidence that felt truly meant to be. The connection wasn't even made until I was on site and pointed it out. It's found it's forever home. 🌞 A desert garden was always the perfect place that I envisioned for my aluminum sculptures and my wish came true! I am honored and humbled by the experience, and I am equally as thrilled to have discovered such a magical place as Las Cruces as I am to have my sculpture chosen to be a part of their city. The beauty of the mountains and the friendliness of the people are unmatched. I never even knew about the Organ Mountains; they are incredible.
