Statement
I create imaginary systems of transformation, where shapes are allowed
to grow and assume new manifestations. I extract forms with razors,
searching for them in both transparent and opaque materials. Cutting
plastic, mylar, and paper enables me to construct multiple layers,
which makes the progression and transitions within my work very
flexible and unfixed during creation. Being able to interchange
parts in order to reconsider their construction is the motivation
for the way in which I choose to work.
I
am interested in retaining individual stages of the creative process
and making them visually apparent through my work. This approach
of showing change is rooted in my fascination with biological processes.
Growth stages evident in plants and insects, the molting of exoskeletons
in invertebrates, and the alterations of internal structures due
to environmental conditions inform my paths of exploration. My imagined
stages are suspended between plexiglass and through the interlocking
of one layer above another. Alterations of proportions and changes
in shape density are evident in this way of organizing information
using layers. I subtract layers revealing the intricacies below
and control the areas of visual access through masking. I imagine
myself as a surgeon, working on damaged parts and making reformations
with a razor in hand. |
